"Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and founding member of The Doors, passed away today at 12:31PM PT at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany after a lengthy battle with bile duct cancer. He was 74. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife Dorothy Manzarek, and his brothers Rick and James Manczarek".
His keyboard lines are some of the most memorable in music, let alone rock music or the music of the 60s, and certainly formed part of my own foundations as a keyboard player. "Light My Fire" was one of the first keyboard tracks I really enjoyed playing, when I first starting playing in bands with friends in my teens. His keyboard melodies were unique, universally enjoyed, and in a world of guitar bands, enabled the keyboard player to shine!
Sad in its simplicity is the message on Manzarek's official website, simply a photograph and the dates 1939 - 2013.
